KWIC: Basics

This article provides a brief introduction to the new KWIC tool in #LancsBox X.

This image shows the basic fuctions on the main KWIC page:

  • The search bar is located at the top of the page. Users can conduct simple searches (seaching for a specific string of characters), wildcard searches, smart searches, and use Corpus Query Language (CQL).
  • The selected corpus is shown in the top left corner of the page. Clicking here will allow the user to select other loaded corpora, download existing corpora, and load their own corpus data into #LancsBox X.
  • Many corpora contain subcorpora based on genre or other textual factors. If the corpus has selectable subcorpora, they can be chosen in the drop down menu next to the corpus selection button.
  • Left clicking on the columns at the top of the search results with sort the results alphabetically based on the results in that column (more advanced filtering options are also available and are discussed here).
  • To save search results, click the three dots in the top right corner of the page. Alternatively, users can select individual concodance lines by clicking them with the left mouse button, multiple lines by holding Ctrl and left clicking on specific hits, or a group of lines by selecting one line, holding the Shift key, and selecting a line above or below to group all results between the two. Once the concordance lines are selected, users can copy them using Ctrl+C and paste them into an Excel sheet or Word document using Ctrl+V (copying to Excel is recommended).
  • Finally, #LancsBox X allows users to view multiple panels on one screen by selecting the '+' sign as shown in the image above. This article provides an overview of this new feature.
