KWIC: Introduction

The KWIC (Key Word In Context) tool generates a list of all instances of a search term in a corpus in the form of a concordance. A concordance is a list of all occurrences of a word or structure in a text or corpus, presented with the words surrounding it. In the KWIC tool, the node (the search term) is displayed in the middle with the surrounding words displayed to the left and right.

The KWIC tool can be used to:

  • Find the frequency of a word or phrase in a corpus.
  • Find frequencies of different word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives.
  • Find complex linguistic structures such as the passives, split infinitives etc. using ‘smart searches’.
  • Sort concordance lines.
  • Compare multiple analyses side-by-side.
